typographer - book illustrator - graphic artist - book designer | ||||
| Famous typographer, book illustrator, and graphic artist Warren Chappell (1904 - 1991) was born in Richmond, Virginia. After studying at the Art Students League in New York, he set up a studio there in 1932 and pursued a joint career as graphic artist/book illustrator and typographer/book designer. As the former, he illustrated many classic texts -- such as "Gulliver's Travels," "Moby Dick," "Wolf Story," "The Nutcracker," "A Charles Dickens Christmas," and "Sleeping Beauty." As the latter, he designed two admired typefaces, Lydian and Trajanus. He wrote several books on typography, including the classic "Short History of the Printed Word." Chappell ended his career as artist in residence at the University of Richmond, his alma mater. |
