Basic Marker Techniques and Materials Here are some very basic techniques for using markers. For more in-depth instruction, see the list of recommended books below. To practice, start by taking a photo of a subject that you'd like to render with markers. Study the photo until you become very familiar with how light, shadow, and reflection affect the colors. Prepare your line drawing. A good paper to use is Bienfang Graphics 360 Marker Paper, which is a 100% rag, non-bleeding paper that is ideal for marker renderings. Make a few copies of your line drawing to work with. Practicing your marker technique on copies allows you to be more creative because you'll be less worried about making mistakes. Good markers to use are Letraset Tria markers , Prismacolor markers, or Pantone Tria markers. Render most of your illustration with broad tip markers for a more striking and strong rendering. Work in light grays and other light colors first. Use cool grays when rendering metals, and warm grays for glass. Build on those by applying medium and dark colors. Then use a colorless blender marker for smoothing. Use Prismacolor pencils, pastel chalk pencils, and/or gouche to sharpen edges and make highlights. Recommended books on marker techniques: Creative Marker Techniques by Yoshiharu Shimizu Product Rendering with Markers by Mark Arends Design Rendering Techniques by Dick Powell Pantone Tria Marker Sets CLEARANCE Based on the Pantone Matching System, each Tria marker matches a specific Pantone color and has three different polyester nib styles to create with: broad, fine, and ultra-fine. One end of the Pantone marker has a broad nib, and at the other end, a removable ultra-fine nib sits on top of a fine nib. Instantly switch to the width you want. High quality, alcohol-based inks give you strong color without the strong odor. Colors won't smudge on photocopies or laser printouts. |
