Basic Marker Techniques and Materials

Here are some very basic techniques for using markers. For more in-depth instruction, see the list of recommended books below.

To practice, start by taking a photo of a subject that you'd like to render with markers. Study the photo until you become very familiar with how light, shadow, and reflection affect the colors.

Prepare your line drawing. A good paper to use is Bienfang Graphics 360 Marker Paper, which is a 100% rag, non-bleeding paper that is ideal for marker renderings.

Make a few copies of your line drawing to work with. Practicing your marker technique on copies allows you to be more creative because you'll be less worried about making mistakes. Good markers to use are Letraset Tria markers , Prismacolor markers, or Pantone Universe markers. Render most of your illustration with broad tip markers for a more striking and strong rendering.

Work in light grays and other light colors first. Use cool grays when rendering metals, and warm grays for glass. Build on those by applying medium and dark colors. Then use a colorless blender marker for smoothing. Use Prismacolor pencils, pastel chalk pencils, and/or gouche to sharpen edges and make highlights.

pantone color chips & guides

When it comes to accurate color matching you can't trust your monitor or your desktop printer. Pantone color guides are a far better way to choose colors for your printed projects. Pantone guides provide colors printed on coated, uncoated, and matte papers. There are Pantone guides that show CMYK process combinations, solid colors, metallics, tints, and pastels. Most designers and printers rely on them for color accuracy.

The following color guides are from Pantone Guides at Dick Blick, but most of these are also available from Pantone Guides at Amazon.
