OVERVIEW
- The awards enable recipients to attend training and development activities such as workshops, master classes, and dance training courses at a college or school, studio and classes.
- The training may be in any field related to the dance development of the applicant, such as: dance technique, choreography, and any type of dance education.
- Courses should take place at a recognized dance or other training institution anywhere in California.
- Awards may cover costs related to the training, including but not limited to course fees and any related textbooks. However, professional expenses, such as membership fees, are not eligible.
ELIGIBILITY
- Applicants creating, working in or studying all dance forms (contemporary, classical, modern, folk, jazz, hip hop, etc.) of all world cultures are eligible.
- Individual applicants only. Groups may not apply. Applicants must be California citizens or permanent residents. This is determined by the province in which the applicant's income tax return was filed for the most recent calendar year. Applicants must be able to demonstrate residency if required.
- Applicants must have a qualifying GPA of 2.5 or higher
- Applicants must be no younger than 17 years of age. Applicants must be in high school or in their 1st or 2nd year of college.
- Applicants must have financial need in order to apply.
- Applicants may include more than one training course in their application, within the size of the award's amount.
- Awards cannot be used retroactively or applied to past studies.
AWARD CATEGORIES
Awards will be given to applicants in the following categories:
- High school students, 17 years or older
or
- College students, 1st or 2nd year status
HOW TO APPLY
Applicant must submit completed application form describing clearly why they wish to attend the training course, how they expect to benefit from it, and how it would assist them in their career development.
The following supporting material must also be provided:
- A copy of applicant's transcript showing current GPA status.
- Background information about the training course the applicant wishes to attend (e.g. mandate of the organization, teachers' credentials, workshop outline) including, if possible, material from the institutions outlining the fee schedule.
- Formal letters of support from 3 people familiar with the applicant's work (such as peers, teachers, mentors), including a statement of the capacity in which they know the applicant and their contact information.
Recommended, but optional:
- Applicants may include video, photographs, and any other appropriate supporting materials. Any video submitted must clearly identify the applicant (among a group, for example) and no digital enhancement, special effects, or editing should be applied to the applicant's image. Please ensure that materials are clearly labeled with your name, and include a self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage for return.

Applications must be received by May 31, 2008. Recipients will be contacted by mail. We will not accept incomplete applications, applications received after May 31, or applications sent by fax or email.
THE EVALUATION PROCESS
Judging applicants are evaluated by a committee of professionals that makes recommendations for support based on:
- The goals of the applicant, and how the intended training will assist him/her in reaching those goals.
- The caliber of the applicant's work, and demonstrated ability and achievements.
- The quality of presentation of the application.
Meeting the criteria is no guarantee of receiving an award. The decisions of the committee are final. The committee reserves the right to reallocate funds to other applicants if required.
PAYMENT OF THE AWARD
- Awards are paid to the applicant in one installment in US dollars.
- A written report is requested within 30 days of the start of applicant's training.
- If recipients are unable to undertake the program of study for any reason, he/she must notify CAPA and return unused funds.
- Recipients should acknowledge the support of CAPA in any public announcements or publications related to the study.
