Tips for Graphic Design

CD Packaging Design

We've been asked what are the standard measurement and output DPI for a CD cover insert, title areas, and back cover inserts. Because there are so many different CD packaging options, there are no longer standard specifications. The best thing to do is to get CD packaging samples from a few vendors. Then select the vendor and the kind of CD packaging you want to use. Each supplier has their own specifications that they'll send to you. Their specifications and measurements are very precise. Ones we've worked with indicate measurements in millimeters. You will need to work closely with the supplier along the way to make sure everything will print as expected.

Magazine Advertisement Layout

When designing a magazine advertisement, try to get the ad to appeal to the senses and/or emotions. You want people to almost feel, smell, and/or taste how good the product is. If you want to convey "soft," maybe soften the photo. Be sure to take into account whether your ad will appear on the right or left page, paying attention to how your ad leads the eye. Look at ads with similar concepts to see what you like and don't like about them. Also, go to one of the major magazine websites and look at their advertising specifications. That will give you an idea of what measurements you should use for bleeds, type area, etc.
