Q&A: What are the employment opportunities like for graphic designers in your area?
Most of the large corporations have in-house design departments that offer junior- to senior-level positions. These companies also use independent contractors for special projects. Several of the small design studios in the San Francisco Bay Area have a lot of work to contract out, but are seeking people who are already very experienced. They want designers who can meet tight deadlines and can handle stress. Design studios and corporations with their own art departments are concentrated in the Bay Area, and I'm sure that there is a need for designers who are just starting out as well as experienced designers. Following is more information about jobs for designers. (More graphic design Q&As are on our "starting out in graphic design" pages.) |

From 2005 to 2012
Self Employment Three out of 10 designers are self-employed / freelance -- almost 5 times the proportion for all professional and related occupations. Competition Despite projected faster-than-average employment growth, designers are expected to face keen competition for available positions. Many talented individuals are attracted to designer jobs. Individuals with little or no formal education in design, as well as those who lack creativity and perseverance, will find it very difficult to establish and maintain a career in design. Demand Overall, the employment of designers is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2012. In addition to those that result from employment growth, many job openings will arise from the need to replace designers who leave the field. Among the design specialties, graphic designers are projected to provide the most new jobs. Demand for graphic designers should increase because of the rapidly increasing demand for Web-based graphics and the expansion of the video entertainment market, including television, movies, videotape, and made-for-Internet outlets.
